CMT Atomizers: An Italian business with a global outlook

Our origins: From family workshop to global player
CMT Atomizers was founded in the 1950s as a small family-run company in northern Italy, focused from the very beginning on rotary atomizers for spray drying plants. Over the decades, the business evolved from building its first machines to becoming a specialist manufacturer of high-performance atomizers for demanding industrial processes. Today, more than 2,000 CMT units are installed worldwide — a result that reflects steady investment in technology, engineering expertise, and long-term customer partnerships.
As the company grew, new facilities and capabilities followed. Key milestones include the establishment of a larger factory in Sovico in the 1980s and, more recently, the opening of a 2,500 sqm headquarters in Albiate, near Milan, complete with a dedicated test center and metrology room for performance and quality checks. Today, after more than seven decades of growth, CMT combines the flexibility of its origins with the organization and processes of a global manufacturer.
In the last two decades, CMT has become a leading Italian exporter of atomizers, with around 95% of recent sales coming from outside the country. Our equipment is installed across Europe, North and South America, and Asia, including long-standing relationships in key markets such as China and Japan.
Trade fairs have also strengthened this global presence. CMT has showcased its technologies at major events in Germany, Iceland, China, Japan, and the United States, meeting process engineers and decision-makers from a wide range of industries. Participation in Powtech 2025 in Nuremberg is one example of how we continue to expand our footprint and visibility.
For CMT, supplying an atomizer is only the beginning of the relationship. We have developed a comprehensive range of spare parts and services to support rotary atomizers throughout their lifecycle, covering both our own models and those of other major brands. Our offering includes scheduled maintenance, diagnostics, refurbishment, modernization, and upgrades designed to improve performance, safety, and energy efficiency.
Because the atomizer is the heart of a spray dryer, CMT’s service expertise has a direct impact on product quality and plant uptime. Our dedicated programs for atomizer wheels, vibration monitoring, lubrication checks, and test runs under realistic load conditions help reduce unexpected stoppages and extend equipment lifetime.
Beyond individual components, CMT’s aftermarket services also address plant-level needs such as safety surveys, capacity increases, waste heat recovery, and process optimization. Thanks to this combination of technical expertise and fast response, our customers receive support that goes well beyond routine maintenance.
Customization has always been a defining part of CMT’s approach. When standard solutions are not enough, we can develop tailor-made atomizers and accessories that fit existing plants and specific process conditions. This includes custom wheels, special materials, ATEX-compliant designs for potentially explosive atmospheres, oil-free configurations, and hygienic layouts for food and pharmaceutical production.
CMT’s engineers work with advanced 2D and 3D design tools, FEM and FEA calculations, and CFD simulations to validate critical components before manufacturing. The goal is to deliver equipment that adapts to the customer’s process—not the other way around. This engineering flexibility has made CMT a trusted partner in sectors such as food, dairy, flavors, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, ceramics, and flue gas cleaning (FGC).
As its installed base has grown, CMT has built a reputation for combining Italian manufacturing quality with rigorous international standards. Our atomizers and related equipment are engineered to meet the regulations of the countries where they are installed, from ATEX directives for explosive atmospheres to hygiene requirements for food and pharma plants and other local safety rules.
This commitment is supported by structured internal processes and dedicated quality assurance. The company’s ISO 9001:2015 certification confirms an approach based on consistency, traceability, and continuous improvement. For customers operating in highly regulated sectors, this means smoother validation, reduced risk of non-conformity, and more predictable production.
Over the years, this emphasis on quality and compliance has helped CMT build long-term trust with customers around the world. And while much has changed since the original family workshop of the 1950s, the company’s commitment to reliability, customization, and service remains the same — now strengthened by the reach and capabilities of a global manufacturer.
